Tontitown, Arkansas is in Washington County. The town was founded in 1898 by Italian settlers who had moved into the area and found the climate and land similar to their native Italy. It was named for an Italian explorer Henri de Tonti. The area was known for its grapes and wines and began hosting a grape festival in 1898. The town was incorporated in 1909. By the early 1920s apples had become a major crop in the area but the grape production was still strong enough for the Welch Company to build a plant to process grapes for juice. Today there are approximately 3,500 people that live in Tontitown.
Residents and visitors can take advantage of the great grape produce by visiting The Tontitown Winery. This is a quaint winery that offers a tasting room with a patio for visitors. The wine is made on site, there are tables outdoors to enjoy the wine and the scenery, and you can enjoy an exhibit on the art of Italian winemaking. Like in many towns in the area, there are plenty of parks available in Tontitown for residents to enjoy. The City Park has two covered pavilions, a covered bocce court and volleyball nets and a baseball diamond. The Harry Sbanotto Park is a public park full of mature oak trees, the perfect spot to enjoy the scenery and spend some time relaxing. The Tontitown Historical Museum is a small building that is located next to a park. Here you can learn of the history of the area.
