Tontitown, Arkansas is in Washington County. The town was founded in 1898 by Italian settlers who had moved into the area and found the climate and land similar to their native Italy. It was named for an Italian explorer Henri de Tonti. The area was known for its grapes and wines and began hosting a grape festival in 1898. The town was incorporated in 1909. By the early 1920s apples had become a major crop in the area but the grape production was still strong enough for the Welch Company to build a plant to process grapes for juice.
